Eastern States Classic semifinal results: Barczak, Fekishazy reach finals

Monroe-Woodbury senior Evan Barczak broke a 1-1 tie on a takedown with 53 seconds left and added three back points to defeat John Jay Cross River’s Connor Melbourne 6-1 in the Eastern States Classic 152-pound semifinals.

Barczak, who earned the 204th win of his career, appeared to have Melbourne pinned as seconds ticked off the clock in the third period. He will meet Plainview Old Bethpage JFK’s Peter Pappas, a two-time state finalist, for the 152-pound championship.

Barczak avenged a loss to Melbourne for fifth place in the state last season.

Wallkill’s Mike Fekishazy advanced to his first Eastern States Classic final in dramatic fashion.

Fekishazy, a senior 182-pounder, scored a takedown with 18 seconds left in the sudden-victory period to earn a 3-1 win over John Jay Cross River’s Evan Frank. He was a split second away from being taken down by Frank. Fekishazy kept his body moving and was able to pull out the victory.

Next up for Fekishazy is Hilton’s Louie Deprez, ranked No. 2 in the country.

Evan Barczak pushed undefeated and top seed Peter Pappas of Plainview Old Bethpage to the limit in their 152-pound Eastern States Classic final.

The match between two of New York’s best went into the sudden-victory period tied at 1-1 before Pappas scored a takedown with 14 seconds left to pull out the win.

Barczak said he will use the setback as motivation to work harder in practice in preparation for the state tournaments and another shot at Pappas.

“You can look at it in one of two ways,” Monroe-Woodbury coach John Gartiser said. “You can look at as, ‘Hey, I need to figure out where I need to get better.’ Usually you learn more from your losses. Or you can be upset about it and put your head down and things can go downhill real quick when you think like that. You just have to have the right mindset and move forward.”

Mike Fekishazy became the fourth Wallkill wrestler to advance to an Eastern States Classic final. The senior did not lock up with nationally-ranked Louie Deprez opting to take a medical forfeit. Fekishazy was noticeably limping when he named was announced with all of the finalists.

Quick thoughts: Pine Bush-Middletown hoops

$

Pine Bush coach Steve Distefano said his team didn’t play its best game of the seasson in a 69-62 win over Middletown Wednesday but the Bushmen will certainly take the victory.

Pine Bush became the first team since Kingston on Feb. 12, 2014 to beat Middletown on its home floor and stayed undefeated (12-0).

One Pine Bush fan held up a sign, “Splash Bros” with Brandon Powell’s No. 5 and Bryan Powell’s No. 24. The Powells scored 20 points each. Brandon Powell missed four minutes of the first quarter after receiving a cut on his nose from taking a charge.

“Winning is not easy,” Distefano said. “Winning is tough. You are going to come out with boo-boos like that. He (Brandon Powell) toughed it out tonight, stuck it out and helped up get the win.”

Bryan Powell and Mason Memmelaar punished Middletown on the glass converting second, third and fourth chances.

Pine Bush guard Marquis Johnson can get up. Johnson denied a Middletown fast break with a block and threw down a dunk off a putback in the second quarter.

Pine Bush, the defending OCIAA Division I champion, is now 3-0 in league and host Newburgh Free Academy (8-3, 2-1) Friday.

Pine Bush entered the game averaging 85 points. The Bushmen scored its most narrow win of the season. Pine Bush had defeated both John S. Burke Catholic and Albertus Magnus by 14 points each and blew out everyone else on its schedule.

Both teams struggled from distance, hitting just two 3-pointers each.

Middletown’s starting big men Jayden Nichols (15) and Bright Afful (14) combined for 29 points. Guard Marquis Gill led Middletown with 18 points but the Middies didn’t receive much production from the rest of its perimeter/wing players.

Afful scored eight straight points, including two straight 3-point play, in the fourth quarter to bring Middletown to within 60-54 but he fouled out on the next play with 2:43 left in the game.

Saturday wrestling wrap: Owens MOW at Gene Brigham

Monticello’s Patrick Owens upset returning Section 9 champion Tyler Lynch of Minisink Valley 4-2 in the semifinals and edged Minisink Valley’s Sean Savacool 6-5 to win the 120-pound title to earn most outstanding wrestler honors at the Gene Brigham Invitational at Minisink Valley Middle School Saturday.

Lynch did not wrestle his next match following the semifinals, taking a medical forfeit.

Minisink Valley junior and returning Section 9 champion Connor Greiner captured his first tournament title of the season after making his season debut Wednesday. Greiner, who was injured in the preseason, won all three of his matches by pin.

“I’m feeling really good,” Greiner said. “I’m really excited. I’m glad I’m back wearing a Minisink Valley singlet again.”

Goshen senior 220-pounder Ryan Ellefsen was dominant, pinning all three of his opponent, including an eight-second fall of Garrett Olbrych of East Providence, R.I. in the semifinals.

Minisink Valley’s Joey Yanis pinned Middletown’s Adonis Morano, a 2016 Section 9 finalist, in 4:59 to win the 182-pound final. Morano moved up to 182 to wrestle Yanis.

Eldred senior Noah Curreri said he’s been working on his offense lately and it showed in a 10-4 win over Minisink Valley’s Timmy Ganuncio in the 160-pound final.

“That match right there really improves my confidence,” Curreri said. “That’s the way I’ve been wrestling. When I don’t get my offense going like that, it makes me mad. I know I’m a better wrestler.”

Curreri suffered his first two losses of the season at the Eastern States Classic last weekend.

“It was a bad day, a bad weekend,” Curreri said. “I’m bounced back from it. When I’m on top of the podium at the end of the year, that’s what matters.”

The first Brawl For The Belt certainly lived up to its billing.

Monroe-Woodbury and Minisink Valley’s dual meet went down to final match, which happened to be the most anticipated bout of the night.

The 120-pound clash between Monroe-Woodbury’s Marco Vespa and Minisink Valley’s Tyler Lynch went to the sudden-victory period with Vespa pulling out a 3-1 victory with 25 seconds left.

Here’s an interview with Vespa after the win and some matches videos including Minisink Valley’s Nick Picariello 8-7 win in the ultimate tiebreaker over Nick Scancarello at 99 pounds:

Saugerties seventh grade basketball phenom Dior Johnson

Dior Johnson wanted to play for the Saugerties varsity basketball team as a sixth grader last year.

Johnson was told he would have to wait a year. New York allows seventh graders to compete at the varsity level if they pass a maturity test.

“I was trying,” Johnson said.

The wait is over. Johnson, who turned 13 Saturday, is one of the more electrifying talents in Section 9 basketball this season.

Washingtonville coach Todd Rose confirmed Johnson is “legit” after the seventh-grader dropped 32 points on his team Friday night.

Rose said he designed a defense to contain Johnson but the 5-foot-9 guard’s speed makes him difficult to stop. Johnson scored 15 points in the fourth quarter alone and nearly led Saugerties to a win over Washingtonville, a Class AA team. He notched his third straight 30-point game.

“From here on out, I’m trying to have 30-plus (point) games because I know I can do it now,” Johnson said. “People know I can do it. My teammates trust in me. (Saugerties junior guard) Austin Curlin is a great player and a great friend. He gets me motivated and he tells me what to do on the court and what not to do. He makes sure he gets me open. If we are down, he’ll said, ‘take the ball and do you.’”

Johnson can shoot from anywhere on the court if coach Mike Tiano allowed him. He’s creating his own 3-point line at Saugerties’ gym. Johnson routinely hit 3-pointers behind white line (used for volleyball), which is about four-feet beyond the normal high school arc of 19 feet, nine inches.

Some of Johnson’s moves and shots around the rim are mesmerizing. Where does Johnson’s creativity come from?

“I go to Kingston Boys & Girls Club every day and the Kingston YMCA,” Johnson said. “I play rec basketball. There, we kind of free form. I’m use to that. I’m used to finishing with different kind of styles of layups. I’m used to finishing fancy at the rim. I just trust my shots. It’s all in trust.

“I’m not even thinking about it. Say if I go up on the right and your hand is on the right, I’m going to do a reverse or anything I can do put it up on the left, whatever I need to do to put the ball in the basket.”

Johnson plans to play up on the 15-and-under New York City Rocks team after the high school season.

A few school cancellations Friday prompted the Section 9 Division I tournament to be changed to a one-day tournament Saturday at Monroe-Woodbury.

Some weight classes now may require a wrestler to reel off four straight victories in a day to win.

Photographer Josh Conklin and I broke down each weight class before the tournament was condensed.
