Around the mat: North, Corcoran back on mat

Two Section 9 contenders returned to action Thursday night.

Pine Bush junior 120-pounder Andrew North wrestled his first match since Dec. 27. North, who was nursing a foot injury, defeated Kingston’s Joe Schaefer by technical fall 16-1 in 3:48. He  placed third at 99 pounds last season.

Eldred senior 220-pounder Jesse Corcoran recently went for an MRI on his knee. Corcoran must have received some good news because he wrestled for the first time since Jan. 3 . He pinned Ellenville’s John Avery in 2:19. Corcoran, a Section 9 Division II finalist as a sophomore, missed the 2012 postseason after breaking his left leg.

NFA’s Jakwan “Slinky” Jones reveals how he got his nickname

So how do you get a nickname like “Slinky?”

According to Newburgh Free Academy center/forward Jakwan Jones, he became “Slinky” when his close friend, Jabari Wells, gave him the moniker when they were kid. Wells, also from Newburgh, plays at New York Military Academy in Cornwall.

Jones, 6-foot-5 junior, has been a key addition for Newburgh this season. He averages about eight points and six rebounds for the Goldbacks. Newburgh (7-2) has won five in a row since losing at Middletown on Dec. 12. The Goldbacks end what will be a 17-day layoff when they take on Troy on Jan. 27.

Of course, Newburgh is once again in the mix for the Section 9 Class AA championship. The Goldbacks have a win over Kingston with one game remaining apiece against the Tigers and Middletown. I spoked with Jones and Newburgh swingman Anthony Salmon at practice on Friday.

Middletown senior 220-pounder Alex Ortiz got a little revenge Friday night.

Ortiz beat Minisink Valley senior Josh Bonneau 5-1 in the feature match of the dual meet.

Bonneau had defeated 4-1 in a consolation quarterfinal match at the Eastern States Classic Saturday. He finished third in the tournament. Ortiz was seventh.

Minisink Valley senior Scott Giraud returned to the mat from injury and posted an impressive 7-5 OT win over Johnny Grandson at 152 pounds.

Check out the action in overtime below.

Cheeks avenged those losses pinning Varian in a semifinal and dropping DiCerbo in 53 seconds in the final of the Shenendehowa Invitational Saturday. For his efforts, Cheeks earned tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award.

SLATE HILL – I caught up with Minsink Valley’s boys’ swimming and diving team before today’s practice. The Warriors are undefeated so far this year after winning just three regular season dual meets a season ago. Next Tuesday, Minisink Valley hosts Pine Bush in the regular season finale and both teams are likely to carry an undefeated record into the showdown.

Click on the video above to see some highlights from those interviews.

For the full story, check out the Times Herald-Record on Monday, Jan. 28.

Newburgh’s Wells coming up big at NYMA

$

He’s, perhaps, the best football and basketball player from Newburgh.

But he doesn’t play for Newburgh Free Academy. Junior swingman Jabari Wells is lighting it up for New York Military Academy in Cornwall, averaging 19 points per game. He rushed for 1,200 yards as NYMA’s star running back this fall. NYMA’s Les McMillen, who coaches the basketball and football teams, thinks Wells is A Division I prospect in football. And, possibly, basketball.

“I have a lot of confidence in Jabari,” McMillen said. “In 30 years, I’ve coached some good players, and I have confidence he will do very well.”

McMillen said Wells, who is 6-foot, 190 pounds, could possibly play football in the Big East. With the help of his AAU coach, Harold Rayford Jr. of the Newburgh Zion Lions, Wells arrived to NYMA two years ago.

“Harold just felt this was a better fit for him,” McMillen said. “He was pulling a 70 average at Newburgh. His grades have jumped big time, he’s in the 80’s now. I think this was the right move for him.”

Check back for more on Wells soon on Varsity845.com.

Girls basketball state rankings delayed

Kerrie Walsh dribbles upcourt during last week's game against Valley Central. (Times Herald-Record photo)

I had hoped to bring you the latest girls’ basketball rankings from the New York State Sportswriters Association yesterday, but the polls weren’t published until today.

And then they were quickly taken down.

Luckily, Jordan Griffith was able to post the results on Twitter before the polls were yanked. For more info, check out his feed here: @MSGV_JGriffith.

Monroe-Woodbury was ranked No. 29 in Class AA, falling a few spots after losing to Minisink Valley last week.

Wallkill, after a loss to Marlboro last week, fell to No. 10 in Class A.

Cloleman Catholic, despite two losses over the weekend – by a combined four points, jumped up one spot to No. 8 in Class B. Marlboro, despite the win over Wallkill, fell two spots to No. 21.

Millbrook was listed at No. 12 in Class C. Tri-Valley entered the rankings at No. 24.

The reason the polls were yanked was because Alexander Hamilton of Section 1 fell to No. 5 in the Class C rankings after playing a very tough and competitive game in a loss against Ossining, the No. 1-ranked Class AA team in the state. Supposedly there are a number of other incorrect team records in the poll as well.

I will update this post if there are any changes today or later this week, but that’s where we stand for now.

Any comments on where you think Section 9 teams should be placed in the state rankings? Any thoughts on the Varsity845 top 10? Let me know on Twitter: @THR_Montgomery.

A few minutes with the New Paltz nordic ski team

NEW PALTZ — I caught up with a few members of the New Paltz nordic skiing team today for a story that we’ll have in the paper at some point in the next few weeks. Right now we’re planning on publishing the story on Sun., Feb. 10.

Nordic skiing is a really interesting sport for any number of reasons.

There are only five schools in Section that field nordic skiing teams – New Paltz, Wallkill, Rondout Valley, Kingston and Monticello. The sport is heavily dependent on the weather, which was evident today at New Paltz.

While it was freezing outside, there wasn’t enough snow on the ground for the kids to actually get out and ski. Instead, they spent some time running around the hallways and out on the track, even through the wind chill was at 7 degrees Fahrenheit.

The nordic ski teams also have to travel to get some basic practice in. It’s not unusual for the New Paltz or Wallkill teams to take a trip to Bennington, Vt. just to ski on real snow.

Anyway, we’ll have more on our local nordic skiiers in the paper in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for that.

(Sorry for the shaky camera work in this video. I got a new camera and I’m playing around with the settings. Here’s to better videos – and more videos – in the future)

Port Jervis, Valley Central, Warwick and Wallkill will join the hosts in the 10-team field.

The tournament is broken up into two pools of five teams. Each school will wrestle the five teams in the opposite pool.

Pool A is Newburgh, Valley Central, Warwick, Wallkill and Shoreham.

Shoreham is led by Eastern States champion T.J. Fabian (126 pounds) and James Szymanski, who took third place at 113 at the Eastern States Classic.

Junior 99-pounder Chris Cuccolo and Pine Bush head to the Big 10 Invitational in Albany. Middletown is also in the field with Long Island’s Huntington and Burnt Hills and Queensbury of the Albany area.

The week ahead in girls basketball

$
0
0

Today’s mini-snowstorm wiped out the girls’ basketball schedule for tonight, but there are some games this week that could have playoff ramifications.

Tuesday, 6:30 p.m.

Tri-Valley at Chester

Chester has been perfect in Division V play so far, but Tri-Valley is hanging around with just one division loss so far. Tri-Valley has been red-hot as of late, especially since Katlynn Greffrath broke the school record for 3-pointers in a single game (seven). Chester has a bit more of a balanced scoring attack, but Mardelle Jean still leads the way.

This game will go a long way in determining the Division V title and could also set up some playoff seedings. I don’t think it’s impossible that these two teams wind up playing each other in the Section 9 Class C final in about a month or so.

Sianna VanDyke (#3, top) of Kingston dives for a loose ball over Taylor Brummell (#23) of NFA during the second half of their game in the Kate Walton Fieldhouse in Kingston, NY on Tuesday, February 7, 2012. NFA defeated Kingston 52 - 45. (CHET GORDON photo/Times Herald-Record)

Thursday, 7 p.m.

Kingston at Newburgh Free Academy

Newburgh had a pretty rough start to the season, but the Goldbacks have been coming on strong lately, having won three in a row over Valley Central, Burke Catholic and Washingtonville.

Kingston, on the other hand, has been up and down all season.

With both teams chasing Monroe-Woodbury in the Division I standings, this could be a deciding game for second place in the division. Will either one of these teams be able to start a streak of consistent play heading into February?

Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Wallkill at Red Hook

This will be the first meeting between these two teams, but it won’t likely be the last. It’s very possible that Wallkill and Red Hook meet again in the MHAL semifinals. After that, they could see each other in the Section 9 Class A playoffs, perhaps in the championship game.

Wallkill has some playoff experience on the roster, as the team lost a wild first-round game against Marlboro in last year’s section playoffs.

Red Hook defeated Cornwall in the Section 9 Class A title game.

Wallkill’s Lisa Bouffard is averaging 20.7 points, 3.7 assists, 2.3 blocks, 8.1 rebounds and 3.9 steals.

Red Hook’s Julianne Wilkinson averages 22.3 points, 2.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 4.5 steals per game.

How will the supporting casts hold up in this one?

Minisink Valley also has a pair of crucial games this week against Washingtonville (Tuesday) and Warwick (Thursday). The Division II picture will be cloudier or clearer by late Thursday night.

James Sciarra will not return as Warwick’s football coach

$
0
0

In the shocker of this offseason, James Sciarra will not return as Warwick’s football coach this fall.

On Monday, Sciarra confirmed the news, stating: “I’m not the head football coach any longer.” He declined further comment.

When you think of Sciarra, you think of his wild, wild west-style offenses, which put up tons of points. He had the pedigree: Sciarra is a 1997 Warwick graduate and played linebacker and offensive line for the Wildcats.

As a coach, he went 40-25 in seven seasons, helping the Wildcats to the Section 9 Class AA championship game in 2009 and 2011. Warwick finished 6-3 this past season, losing to Monroe-Woodbury 14-13 in the Section 9 Class AA semifinals.

So what was Sciarra’s downfall?

According to team sources, the Sciarra was “disconnected” from several of his players. I talked to three Warwick players about Sciarra’s dismissal on Monday – quarterback/wide receiver Brad Garcia, linebacker A.J. Sakac and defensive back Matt Cattani. For the most part, the players said nothing disparaging about Sciarra.

However, they didn’t exactly go to bat for him.

Said Garcia, one of the best players in Section 9: “Coach Sciarra was with us for a long time. I feel bad for him, but there is not much you can do as a player. It’s hard, but some things happened in the program that shouldn’t have.”

Garcia declined to elaborate.

Added Sakac, Warwick’s de facto team spokesperson: “Coach Sciarra was a hell of a coach, he was smart, but he was missing one part. He was nothing more than a coach. There was no relationship out of football.”

More from Sakac in Tuesday’s editions of the Times Herald-Record and Varsity845.

Said Cattani: “It’s pretty sad to see coach Sciarra leave, but the administration knows what’s best for the team. I’m not going to try to start anything. There is nothing we can say to argue.”

So who replaces Sciarra? Although it’s early, two potential candidates are John Garcia and Greg Sirico. Garcia has coached in the program for 34 years and served as Warwick’s head coach from 1981-86. His son is Brad Garcia.

Sirico is Warwick’s athletic director. He is the school’s all-time winningest football coach with a 67-27 record (1996-2005). Sciarra served as his successor.

Sciarra has become a fixture in Section 9 football and said he will coach again. I wish him the best.
